  • Traquair is Scotland's oldest inhabited house. It has been lived in for over 900 years and was originally a hunting lodge for the kings and queens of Scotland. John Stuart, 4th Laird of Traquair, was of the Queen's bodyguard to Mary Queen of Scots, who visited the castle in 1566.

The knitters are a sort of cooperative, marketing knitwear for several dozen women on the island.  Mrs. Thomson does all her knitting by hand and likes to stand in front of her window so she can see who is going by.  (She had a pair of binoculars there, just in case.)  Orkney, Scotland

  • Carloway Broch at Carloway on the Isle of Lewis is believed to date from 100 to 300 BC.  Though massive it is not thought to be a fortification as such, but a impressive dwelling for a small community.Dun Carloway (in Scottish Gaelic Dùn Chàrlabhaigh) is a broch situated in the district of Carloway, on the west coast of the Isle of Lewis, Scotland. It is a remarkably well preserved broch - on the east side parts of the old wall still reaches to 9 metres tall. In places there are also more modern repairs to the east wall. At the base the broch is around 14 to 15 metres in diameter and the walls around 3 metres thick.<br />
Dun Carloway was probably built some time in the 1st century BC, and radiocarbon dating evidence from remains found in the broch show that it was last occupied around 1300 AD.  To buy this print click on the SHOPPING CART below.

The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, usually referred to simply as Kew Gardens, are 121 hectares[1] of gardens and botanical glasshouses between Richmond and Kew in southwest London, England.<br />
Kew Gardens originated in the exotic garden at Kew Park formed by Lord Capel John of Tewkesbury. It was enlarged and extended by Augusta, Dowager Princess of Wales, the widow of Frederick, Prince of Wales, for whom Sir William Chambers built several garden structures. One of these, the lofty Chinese pagoda built in 1761 still remains. George III enriched the gardens, aided by William Aiton and Sir Joseph Banks. The old Kew Park (by then renamed the White House), was demolished in 1802. The "Dutch House" adjoining was purchased by George III in 1781 as a nursery for the royal children. It is a plain brick structure now known as Kew Palace.

  • Orreos line the seafront of Combarro near Pontevedra.  Orreos (or horreos) are graneries, unique to Galicia.  Built on stone pillars the flat stones are designed to keep rats and other vermin from getting at the grain.  Orreos are ubiquitous in Galicia, each house having their own.  Now they are an icon and many houses have a decorative orreo in the yard, sometimes even miniature garden versions of no practical use.

This was the first recognized case of mass starvation because of loss of biodiversity. The memorial, which was established in 1997, consists of several statues of people and a dog from the Potato Famine, designed by Dublin’s local artist, Rowan Gillespie.

Ardverikie is one of the great estates of Scotland, with the estate house on the banks of Loch Laggan. The family returns to gather around the ancestral seat several times a year and the gamekeeper hosts grouse shooting and deer stalking.

  • Allan Macpherson-Fletcher at his new home on Balavil Estate near Kingussie, Scotland. He is the heir to the Balavil Estate, descended from estate founder James MacPherson who "discovered" the Ossianic Poems that romanticized the Highlands in the 18th century. <br />
The estate, like many in the Highlands, has now been sold to wealthy incomers. He and his wife Marjorie have moved out of the estate house, taking with them much of the memorabilia of several centuries worth of living the Highland life.

Sorghum is a staple food for people and livestock alike here and the boys like it for the same reason the cows do: it is sweet to chew. Sorghum varieties with tall stalks are favored for the amount of forage they produce. <br />

<br />
Injera is a yeast-risen flat bread with a unique, slightly spongy texture. It is traditionally made out of teff flour. It is traditionally eaten in Ethiopia and Eritrea. The batter is usually mixed several days in advance and allowed to "ferment", using the residual yeasts in the storage bucket to add leavening. <br />
<br />
Cooking is fast, with the batter being poured on in a circular motion from the outside spiraling inwards. The a cover is put over it allowing the rising steam to contribute to the cooking. In only a couple of minutes the bread is done and gently slid onto a mat to transfer to a basket for cooling. Many of the injera are cooked at one time and stored for several days consumption. <br />
<br />
Stews, spices, meats and vegetables are served on the injera, which serves to absorb the juices. Pieces are used to pick up the food, so that the injera serves as untensil, and tablecloth, all of which is eaten.<br />

Having gone through the famine of 1984 they changed their farming methods, bringing back more of the tradtional varieties, but also holding on to larger reserves of food before selling their crops for cash.

  • A family bible lies open in a deserted croft house on North Ronaldsay, the most remote of the Orkney Islands.  When crofters left (or were displaced by landowners) they often simply walked away, evidenced by the cups and saucers still sitting on the shelves.  The slate roof has fallen in letting in the rain and sunlight.

  • Hawa Yesuf cooks injera over a traditional oven built for the purpose in her house in the Fontanina area near Kombulcha, Ethiopia. <br />

Injera is a yeast-risen flat bread with a unique, slightly spongy texture. It is traditionally made out of teff flour. It is traditionally eaten in Ethiopia and Eritrea. The batter is usually mixed several days in advance and allowed to "ferment", using the residual yeasts in the storage bucket to add leavening. <br />
<br />
Cooking is fast, with the batter being poured on in a circular motion from the outside spiraling inwards. The a cover is put over it allowing the rising steam to contribute to the cooking. In only a couple of minutes the bread is done and gently slid onto a mat to transfer to a basket for cooling. Many of the injera are cooked at one time and stored for several days consumption. <br />
<br />
Stews, spices, meats and vegetables are served on the injera, which serves to absorb the juices. Pieces are used to pick up the food, so that the injera serves as untensil, and tablecloth, all of which is eaten.

Heritiera littoralis (Malvaceae) – looking-glass mangrove, native to the Old World tropics; the seawater-proof nut-like fruit contains a single round seed surrounded by a large air space. The prominent keel on their back acts like the sail; fruit up to 10cm long <br />

The hard and strong timber is valued for masts, when it can be got straight enough. It is also used for canoes, firewood, house posts, joists, pressers, telegraph poles, wheel-hubs and boat-ribs. An extract of the seed can be used to treat diarrhoea and dysentery .<br />

It is provisionally rated here as of “least concern” for conservation.  The capsules are common in drift along the shore. The dorsal ridge of the capsule, often described as a keel, is homologous with a wing and actually functions as a sail. Fruits float on the surface of the ocean always with the ridge or wing upward and they are widely distributed by a combination of currents and wind.   • Deer stalking with head gamekeeper Dougie Langlands at Ardverikie Estate near Laggan, Scotland. 

Ardverikie is one of the great estates of Scotland, with the estate house on the banks of Loch Laggan. The family returns to gather around the ancestral seat several times a year and the gamekeeper hosts grouse shooting and deer stalking.

Uncovered during road building in the 1930's the wonderfully preserved village dates from some 2500 years ago.  Remarkably the thatched roofed houses here are almost exactly like the houses you see in use today in O Cebreiro or Piornedo.  One of the most stunning locations I saw in all of Galicia.

  • Views of the Rackwick Valley on the west coast of Hoy.  This valley was one of the first to be settled by Norse incomers (Vikings) and was for centuries a properous community in an idyllic setting.  Now it is largely abandoned but has lost none of its scenic appeal.  Only one crofter still farms here but others have come to convert old croft houses into summer cottages, including the composer Sir Peter Maxwell Davies.  These views look over some of the ruined croft houses and other views look down on a small seaside cottage with the cliffs and beach beyond.g

Cows are led to pasture in the morning and come home later in the day on their own, this one much later.  Here the old Celtic ways are still pretty fresh and the current generation still uses the old Pallozas, thatched stone houses that were home to livestock as well, even if they have built newer living quarters next door.  Jose (check this name) was born in this palloza and still uses it everyday, keeping his cattle and chickens here.  Note the Roman cart, still used in some areas of Galicia.

  • Pilar Ariesto Valiña and her aunt Amelia in the little Galician village of O Cebreiro.  Pilar came to the town as a young woman, when it was a simple Celtic farming hamlet complete with thatch-roofed Palloza. Today she owns the Hotel O Cebreiro and Casa Valiña that houses and feeds countless pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago.
