  • Aerials of the Braes of Doune wind farm near Stirling, Scotland. This wind farm is visible from Stirling Castle, making it somewhat controversial. Other concerns are the siting in moorland that is environmentally sensitive. Completed in 2007, the farm has 36 Vestas V80 2.0 megawatt wind turbines with a total capacity of 72MW.

Weston's Orchards, the oldest active orchard in Waukesha, were established in 1935 by Harvey and Alice Weston on a site owned by Alice's father, William Marckwardt. By this time the farm already had an orchard and several of its current buildings. For example, its Dutch colonial style barn dates to 1901.<br />
<br />
The family-operated orchards have supplied the public with historic apple varieties for over 60 years. Some of the orchards' trees were planted in the late nineteenth century and significant additional plantings were made during the Great Depression by the orchards current owners. The orchards cover 16 acres with more than 700 trees and over 100 varieties with dates varying from the Calville Blanc d'Hiver (1598), Gravenstien (1600) to the Wolf River (1881) and Pink Pearl (1944). Weston's Orchards work to conserve these antique apple vaieties from extinction. The Old Church apple, for example, is grown solely on their farm.

<br />
The Hill Radnor is a breed of domestic sheep originating in the United Kingdom. Classified as one of the mountain (or upland) breeds, it is most common from Powys down to southwest Herefordshire and Monmouthshire. The Hill Radnor has a dense white fleece, with a light brown face and legs. Ewes are polled and rams are horned.[1] It is hardy and forages well, like many hill breeds. Hill Radnor ewes have good maternal instincts, and are sometimes crossed with lowland rams to yield market lambs or mules. Lambing percentages vary under different conditions but the breed can easily average around 155%.[2] The breed is listed as "vulnerable" by the Rare Breeds Survival Trust of the U.K.<br />

Then the bundles are hauled to the stacks where a man on top arranges them so that the grain heads are to the inside of the stack so they will dry and be protected from rain before being threshed. The man on the top of the stack is Nigussu Kissaye.<br />
<br />
Horses are grazing on the new cropped oat ground, foraging for leftover grain and straw.<br />
<br />
In the distant valley are other villages in their typical hilltop positions.

Yacouba has been a famous pioneer in using the technique of Zai, small pits dug in the hard soil to promote plant growth, the restore regions once thought lost to desertification in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Sorghum is a staple food for people and livestock alike here and the boys like it for the same reason the cows do: it is sweet to chew. Sorghum varieties with tall stalks are favored for the amount of forage they produce.

<br />
The Wiltshire Horn is an ancient British breed from the Chalk Downs region of England. Reaching large numbers during the 17th and 18th centuries, they became almost extinct by the beginning of the 20th. A few dedicated breeders persevered with Wiltshires, forming a breed society in 1923. Since the 1970's interest in their unique qualities has increased and by 1982 there were 45 pedigreed flocks in England.<br />
<br />
Wiltshire Horn Sheep were exported to Australia in the 1950's and again in the 1970's. They are currently attracting attention for their lack of wool and the need for shearing, as well as their ability to pass on their vitality and quality meat in a cross-breeding program.<br />

  • Welsh pigs are part of the farm display at St. Fagan National History Museum near Cardiff, Wales. The Welsh pig is white, with lop ears meeting at the tips just short of the pig’s nose. It has a long level body with deep strong hams and legs set well apart. George Eglington acknowledged as the founder of the modern Welsh breed described the perfect Welsh pig as “pear shaped” when viewed from either the side or from above. They are still known for their hardiness and ability to thrive under a wide variety of conditions, both indoor and outside.

 The British White is polled (genetically hornless), docile and was a dual purpose breed (beef and milk) until 1950. Since then the British Whites selection has been for beef production with carry over heavy milk production.

  • The Ejere Farming Community Seed Bank in Ejere, Ethiopia was built by Ethio Organic Seed Action to help farmers regain traditional local varieties of grain that are better adapted to their location. Seed bank members donate seeds and in turn get seeds from the seed bank. Regassa Feyissa with EOSA is one of the founders and promoters of the seed bank and helps the local farmers. <br />
<br />
The germplasm reserve saves a wide variety of crops that may not be grown every year and acts as a safety net in case of crop failure. <br />
<br />
Farmers seen in the seed bank with Regassa are Taddesse Retta, chair of the Farmer Conservator Association and Eshetu Badada, the treasurer.

  • Bannatyne MacLeod working sheep on his croft on the Isle of Harris, Scotland Island crofters survived by being adaptable and dogged, doing everything from farming to fishing to herding sheep to make a living. Generations of his MacLeods have worked these rocky hills before  Bannatyne MacLeod took over the farm.

  • Stacking oats on the farm of Eshete Girma in the central Shewa region of Ethiopia north of Addis Ababa. The oats are being brought in from the fields on donkeys, then stacked with the grain to the inside of the stack so that it will dry and be protected from rain, before it is threshed. <br />
<br />
Building the stacks is actually a quick affair, taking on half an hour or so.  Seen on top of the stack is Eshete's son and farmer Girma Regassa, directing the operations and building he final cap on the stack. <br />
<br />
The oat variety is an old locally adapted variety called Avena Vaviloviana, named after the famed Russion seed saver N.I. Vavilov who traveled this region in the 1920's doing research and collecting seeds.

  • Sheko cattle being kept, protected and studied at the ILRI farm in the Ghibe Valley of southern Ethiopia. The Sheko are endangered with only about 2,500 known to be alive. Their are valuable for their adaptation to climates where they are resistant to diseases carried by the tsetse fly. ILRI is studing and breeding the herd.<br />

Sheko and Abigar and 31 of the Gurage were purchased from their natural habitats and introduced in to medium to high tsetse–trypanosomosis challenge area of the Ghibe valley<br />
<br />
Trypanosomiasis or trypanosomosis is the name of several diseases in vertebrates caused by parasitic protozoan trypanosomes of the genus Trypanosoma. Approximately 500,000 men, women and children in 36 countries of sub-Saharan Africa suffer from human African trypanosomiasis which is caused by either Trypanosoma brucei gambiense or Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense. The other human form of trypanosomiasis, called Chagas disease, causes 21,000 deaths per year [1] mainly in Latin America.

  • Lorne Nelson raises Highland cattle on his family estate, Kilmaronaig, near Connel, Argyll, Scotland. His is one of the largest herds, now used primarily as breeding stock, with the Highland cattle providing a reliable degree of heartiness when cross bred with other cattle. For Nelson the cattle are part of a diversified farming program that even includes oyster and mussel farming.

Members of the seed bank contribute seeds and can use the seeds for their crops. Included in the seed bank is a germplasm reserve, where seeds are stored in jars as a further means of preserving greater crop diversity. <br />

Sophora secundiflora (Fabaceae) - Texas mountain laurel, mescal bean; native to North America (Texas, New Mexico, northern Mexico)<br />
The hard, fibrous and indehiscent camaras of the Texas mountain laurel (Sophora secundiflora, Fabaceae-Papilionoideae) appear to be adapted to dispersal by large herbivorous mammals such as antelopes. However, most of the potential dispersers in North America would have died out c. 13.000 years ago, at the end of the last ice age. The only native antelope in the southern US is the pronghorn (Antilocapra americana). Observations as to whether the pronghorn does eat the fruits of the Texas mountain laurel seem to be missing. The very hard and shiny seeds of the Texas mountain laurel are coloured bright red, a characteristic that generally indicated 'fraudulent' bird-dispersal ('fruit mimicry'). However, since the fruits are very hard and indehiscent, the conspicuous colour of the seeds is hard to explain from an adaptational point of view. Perhaps their colour is part of a two-stage dispersal mechanism, tricking birds into picking the seeds from the faeces of megafaunal herbivores.<br />

It is drought-tolerant, prefers rocky limestone soil, and is native from central Texas west to New Mexico and south to San Luis Potosi in Mexico. Like many woody plants native to rocky soils, it is slow growing. The fragrance of Texas mountain laurel flowers is reminiscent of artificial grape products.

The characteristic fruits bear two wings produced by only two of the five sepals of the calyx of the flower (the other 3 sepals remain small)/ The members of the meranti family (Dipterocarpaceae) are a dominant component of lowland tropical rainforests and exploited for their valuable timber.<br />
The species is currently Classified as Critically Endangered (CR) on the IUCN Red List.

Shorea macrophylla (Dipterocarpaceae =  meranti family) - engkabang jantong (Malay), length of fruit: 12.5cm – The members of the meranti family are a dominant component of lowland tropical rainforests and exploited for their valuable timber; The calyx of the flower develops into the wings (3 large ones, 2 smaller ones) assist wind dispersal of the large, single-seeded nuts. Shorea macrophylla is the main source of illepenuts, the fruits are obtained from trees 15 years of age. It produces the biggest nuts of all engkabangs with sizes of 5.5 - 6.0 x 2.9 - 3.2cm snippets from the internet: <br />
Engkabang jantung (Shorea macrophylla) and Acacia mangium are two of the most popular wood species that frequently used as inputs for interior decoration such as cabinets, furnitures, and turnery. The plants are also used for particleboard, plywood, veneer, pulp, fence, firewood and charcoal (Sanchez, 2006, Anon,2009). Mohamad Azani et al., (2001) studied that engkabang jantung can grow very fast and form wide spreading crowns, even though it is planted under shades of the higher trees. Engkabang is a protected species and can be found scattering throughout Sarawak, usually on clay alluvial soil of riparian forest and lower slopes of clay hill sides below 600m above sea level (Anon, 2009 and Anon 2009a).
