  • Mrs. Sandra Thomson, one of the Sanday knitters works in her tiny house on the island of Sanday. The knitters are a sort of cooperative, marketing knitwear for several dozen women on the island. Mrs. Thomson does all her knitting by hand and likes to stand in front of her window so she can see who is going by. (She had a pair of binoculars there, just in case.) Orkney, Scotland

  • The Lonach Games and Gathering is one of the Highlands premier events, highlighted by the March of the Lonach Highlanders from country house to country house where they are toasted by the clan chiefs for the service and loyalty. Then on to the traditional games with all the events including caber tossing, highland dance competition and the tug of war. The Lonach Highland and Friendly Society was founded in 1823 by Sir Charles Forbes, 1st Baronet of Newe and Edinglassie (1773-1849). Membership is drawn from the inhabitants of Strathdon, who continue to fulfil the society’s original mission of preserving Highland dress and “supporting loyal, peaceful, and manly conduct; and the promotion of social and benevolent feelings among the inhabitants of the district.”

  • The Petite Tromenie is one of the most important pardons in Brittany, ancient holy days with Celtic roots where the relics of the church are paraded out to ancient holy sites like holy wells, or as here in Locronan, up the mountain to where St. Ronan was killed by a witch. It is a big day of celebration in the town and people like Annie and Rene Louboutin dress in traditional costume, walk the route and celebrate with friends afterwards.
