  • Repatriated potatoes in the warehouse at Pampallacta at the Parque de la Papa near Pisac, Peru.   Varieties shown are being "repatriated" from the seed bank at CIP in Lima, Peru, the international potato center. These varieties were collected from the surrounding area and kept at CIP, and are now being planted and grown by the people living in the potato park.

  • Papa wata ceremony, performed after potatoes are brought in from the field, to call the spirit of the potato because the spirt of the potato sometimes stays in the field.  Mariano Sutta Apucusi and his wife Antonia are seen holding the potatoes over incense.  Part of the ceremony is the kintu ceremony, where three coca leaves are held up to call the spirits of the mountains, or apus. <br />

When he is holding up the coca leaves it is the Kintu ceremony, part of many ceremonies, an offering to Mother Earth and to thank the apus, the sacred mountains. <br />

  • The market in Bati is incredibly large, diverse and crowded, being the place where people from the lowlands and highlands of northern Ethiopia meet to exchange their crops, livestock and wares. Something like 20,000 people show up at the Monday market every week. <br />
<br />
Grain is an extremely important commodity, including the all important teff for making injera. Farmers and sellers lay their grain out in bags and piles on plastic sheeting on the ground, and measure it out with tin cans. <br />
<br />
The cattle and camel market is equally large, with pastoral herders from the lowlands, many of them Afar people, coming to sell their livestock to the highland people. The market takes place in one big corral, with buyers and sellers squeezed in amongst the animals.

  • Harvesting sorghum in the Wakoro region of Mali. Sorghum grain heads are collected after the tall stalks have been knocked over, then taken to be threshed and winnowed. <br />

They have about 30 people in their family farm group and think they grow about 12 tons of sorghum. They will keep 7 tons for family consumption and sell 5 tons on the market.

The tough feet of ostriches are well protected against the sharp spines of this fruit but animals with cleft hoofs or relatively soft soles can suffer terrible wounds. The Khoisan peoples of the Kalahari Desert have used the tuberous root of the devil’s claw for thousands of years to treat pain during pregnancy and to prepare ointments to heal sores, boils and other skin problems.   • Men plow fields near Waliso in southern Ethiopia with teams of oxen. Using plows that are nearly timeless they are plowing fields that were planted to teff. These are not the more modern mouldboard plows that actually roll the soil over, but just a sort of spike that breaks the ground up. <br />
<br />
The men plowing were: Ayele Terefe in the orange shirt with the stick, and Teshome Negese with the red and white shirt.<br />

  • Sheko cattle being kept, protected and studied at the ILRI farm in the Ghibe Valley of southern Ethiopia. The Sheko are endangered with only about 2,500 known to be alive. Their are valuable for their adaptation to climates where they are resistant to diseases carried by the tsetse fly. ILRI is studing and breeding the herd.<br />

  • Famine Memorial, set on Custom House Quay in the Docklands of Dublin, Ireland, memorializes the great loss of life during the Irish Potato Famine of the 1840's. This was the first recognized case of mass starvation because of loss of biodiversity. The memorial, which was established in 1997, consists of several statues of people and a dog from the Potato Famine, designed by Dublin’s local artist, Rowan Gillespie.

  • St. Kilda is a small group of islands some 40 miles west of the Outer Hebrides off the northwest coast of Scotland.  It is famous for its bird colonies and the story of the evacuation of the people of St. Kilda in 1930, after thousands of years of human occupation.

  • Gordon Muir is the gamekeeper of Tarbert Estate on the Isle of Juram Scotland. Muir takes deer stalkers out on the hills of Jura. He is very traditional, wearing tweed plus fours and a deerstalker cap. The Isle of Jura is on the west coast of Scotland and known for having more than 6,000 deer but only 200 people.

  • Keepers from ther Lee Richardson Zoo in Garden City, Kansas take the elephants, Moki and Chana, for a swim in the World's Largest Free Municipal Cement Bottom Swimming Pool.  The pool was just closed for the season and since the zoo does not have a pool for the Elephants this is their one bath of the year.  Keepers in swimming with the elephants were Robin Neff and Nick McDaniel.  Up on the bank were Jeff Bullock and Dave Wade.  The Elephants are 10-year-old Africans and have been at the zoo for 8 years.  The zoo gets some 210,000 visitors a year.  On a previous day they had 3,000 people to see the elephants swimmin g.

  • The Petite Tromenie is one of the most important pardons in Brittany, ancient holy days with Celtic roots where the relics of the church are paraded out to ancient holy sites like holy wells, or as here in Locronan, up the mountain to where St. Ronan was killed by a witch.  It is a big day of celebration in the town and people like Annie and Rene Louboutin dress in traditional costume, walk the route and celebrate with friends afterwards.

  • Market day in Goro, Ethiopia where women bring grain to sell and farmers bring cattle and other livestock. The cattle market is very busy with sellers and buyers mingling side by side with the animals. <br />
<br />
The grain may be ground into flower or may be used as seed for the next season's crop. They pour the grain to show it off and to further winnow and clean it to make it more valuable. Some were selling corn and chickpeas, but many were selling the typically Ethiopian grain called teff. <br />
<br />
Some choose to sell their grain directly to a broker or middleman rather that sit all afternoon in the hot sun. They can be seen with their bags of grain on a scale, waiting anxiously to see what price they will get for it. <br />

Cerbera manghas (Apocynaceae) – pink-eyed cerbera, sea mango; native from the Seychelles to the Pacific – drift fruit; commonly found as flotsam on beaches in the Indian and Pacific Ocean. After the outer skin of the fruit has rotten away, the cage of woody vascular bundles enclosing a massive corky mesocarp with large intercellular air-spaces that affords the fruit excellent and long-lasting buoyancy in sea water; length of fruit: 9cm. <br />
Wikipedia: The leaves and the fruits contain the potent cardiac glycoside cerberin, which is extremely poisonous if ingested. People in olden times used the sap of the tree as a poison for animal hunting. The fruit was reportedly eaten to commit suicide in the Marquesas Islands. Because of its deadly poisonous seeds, the genus name is coming from Cerberus, the hell dog from the Greek mythology, hence indicating the toxicity of the seeds. In Madagascar, the seeds were used in sentence rituals to poison kings and queens

  • Residents of Cuba, Kansas gather to see the effects of lighting in their community of some 200 people.  The local utility company offered to help by turning out the lights in the whole town so that the contrast between normal street lighting and dark skies could be seen in this town in the sparsely populated area of north central Kansas. The gas station is on the left and the community hall is on the right.

  • Orkney farmer Ronald Simison in the Tomb of the Eagles holding one of the skulls he discovered during his excavation of the site.  He discovered the tomb in 1958 and excated it some 20 years later, tired of waiting for the officials to get around to the job.  Now he and his daughters have made a small business of the tomb, operating it as a hands-on museum.  It is on Isbister Farm on South Ronaldsay.  Eagle claws found with the skulls indicated the status of the people burried in the chambered cairn.

The hard, fibrous and indehiscent camaras of the Texas mountain laurel (Sophora secundiflora, Fabaceae-Papilionoideae) appear to be adapted to dispersal by large herbivorous mammals such as antelopes. However, most of the potential dispersers in North America would have died out c. 13.000 years ago, at the end of the last ice age. The only native antelope in the southern US is the pronghorn (Antilocapra americana). Observations as to whether the pronghorn does eat the fruits of the Texas mountain laurel seem to be missing. The very hard and shiny seeds of the Texas mountain laurel are coloured bright red, a characteristic that generally indicated 'fraudulent' bird-dispersal ('fruit mimicry'). However, since the fruits are very hard and indehiscent, the conspicuous colour of the seeds is hard to explain from an adaptational point of view. Perhaps their colour is part of a two-stage dispersal mechanism, tricking birds into picking the seeds from the faeces of megafaunal herbivores.<br />

  • Gordon Muir is the gamekeeper of Tarbert Estate on the Isle of Juram Scotland. Muir takes deer stalkers out on the hills of Jura. He is very traditional, wearing tweed plus fours and a deerstalker cap. The Isle of Jura is on the west coast of Scotland and known for having more than 6,000 deer but only 200 people.

  • The ancient Irish hill fort of Dun Aengus, perched 300 feet above the crashing Atlantic waves on the wes, is a great place to see and sense the Celts taking a last stand with their backs to the sea, and no place else to go. The whole island of Inishmoor is hardly anything more that rocks and great sea views, but it was all they had.  <br />

 A 700BC stone fort, the rival of any in Europe. The fort stretches to the cliff edge on the western side of the Island and the fact that it remains is testimony to the skills and determination of ancient Celtic tribesmen who lived, worked and fought here 3000 years ago. The sight of the ancient building, the sound of crashing waves against the cliff face below, and the sweet sea air, guarantee that this site stays in the memory of visitors. There are less people around in the evening if you want a chance to see the area on your own. Be careful on the cliff face. Two other impressive stone forts, Dun Eochla and Dun Duchathair are also worth the visit.<br />

  • Sheko cattle being kept, protected and studied at the ILRI farm in the Ghibe Valley of southern Ethiopia. The Sheko are endangered with only about 2,500 known to be alive. Their are valuable for their adaptation to climates where they are resistant to diseases carried by the tsetse fly. ILRI is studing and breeding the herd.<br />

Trypanosomiasis or trypanosomosis is the name of several diseases in vertebrates caused by parasitic protozoan trypanosomes of the genus Trypanosoma. Approximately 500,000 men, women and children in 36 countries of sub-Saharan Africa suffer from human African trypanosomiasis which is caused by either Trypanosoma brucei gambiense or Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense. The other human form of trypanosomiasis, called Chagas disease, causes 21,000 deaths per year [1] mainly in Latin America.<br />

Muck is the smallest of four main islands in the Small Isles, part of the Inner Hebrides of Scotland. It measures roughly 2.5 miles (4 km) east to west and has a population of around 30, mostly living near the harbour at Port Mòr. The other settlement on the island is the farm at Gallanach. The island's only road, about 1.5 miles (2.4 km) long, connects the two.

Ricinus communis (Euphorbiaceae) - castor oil plant; native to tropical Africa, naturalized throughout the tropics - seeds; the seeds of the castor oil plant, called 'castor beans', contain a very valuable oil that is used both as a purgative as well as a lubricant for jet engines and heavy machinery. The seeds are also infamous for containing ricin, one of the strongest poisons found in nature. One milligram can already be enough to kill an adult. At their micropylar end the seeds bear a fatty elaiosome to attract ants for dispersal; seeds c. 12mm long.<br />
Some interesting facts about Ricinus:<br />
Ricin: The seeds from the castor bean plant, Ricinus communis, are poisonous to people, animals and insects. One of the main toxic proteins is "ricin", named by Stillmark in 1888 when he tested the bean's extract on red blood cells and saw them agglutinate. Now we know that the agglutination was due to another toxin that was also present, called RCA (Ricinus communis agglutinin). Ricin is a potent cytotoxin but a weak hemagglutinin, whereas RCA is a weak cytotoxin and a powerful hemagglutinin. Poisoning by ingestion of the castor bean is due to ricin, not RCA, because RCA does not penetrate the intestinal wall, and does not affect red blood cells unless given intravenously. If RCA is injected into the blood, it will cause the red blood cells to agglutinate and burst by hemolysis. Perhaps just one milligram of ricin can kill an adult. The symptoms of human poisoning begin within a few hours of ingestion. The symptoms are: abdominal pain, vomiting and (sometimes bloody) diarrhea. Within several days there is severe dehydration, a decrease in urine, and a decrease in blood pressure. If death has not occurred in 3-5 days, the victim usually recovers.<br />
Castor oil: Castor beans are pressed to extract castor oil which is used for medicinal purposes.

Cerbera manghas (Apocynaceae) – pink-eyed cerbera, sea mango; native from the Seychelles to the Pacific – drift fruit; commonly found as flotsam on beaches in the Indian and Pacific Ocean. After the outer skin of the fruit has rotten away, the cage of woody vascular bundles enclosing a massive corky mesocarp with large intercellular air-spaces that affords the fruit excellent and long-lasting buoyancy in sea water; length of fruit: 9cm. <br />
Wikipedia: The leaves and the fruits contain the potent cardiac glycoside cerberin, which is extremely poisonous if ingested. People in olden times used the sap of the tree as a poison for animal hunting. The fruit was reportedly eaten to commit suicide in the Marquesas Islands. Because of its deadly poisonous seeds, the genus name is coming from Cerberus, the hell dog from the Greek mythology, hence indicating the toxicity of the seeds. In Madagascar, the seeds were used in sentence rituals to poison kings and queens
